Nicholas
T. Markell studied art at an early age in his home
state of Minnesota. He majored in fine art on
college attentive to the ways his growing artistic
sensibilities nurtured his faith. Having earned a
Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Saint
Thomas in St. Paul, he focused further upon the
relationship between artistic expression and
spirituality. Although drawn to religious topics and
themes, Nicholas explored many different subjects in
a wide array of styles and forms.
In 1987, Nicholas chose to
respond more fully to his religious yearnings by
studying for the priesthood, earning both a Master
of Arts degree in Theology and a Master of Divinity
degree from the Washington Theological Union on
Washington, DC. Among his studies was that of
ancient Christian symbolism. After seriously
considering ordination, Nicholas ultimately felt
called to the art studio, where his spiritual quest
continues and remains strongly evident in all his
art.
